1. World Series of Poker Main Event

Buy in: $10 000
Location: Las Vegas
Game: NL Hold’em
Famous Champion: Phil “Poker Brat” Helmuth
Website:  http://www.wsop.com/

  • The most prestigious poker event of the year
  • All final table players become millionaires
  • Slow structure and lots of play

The Main Event, as it is usually called among players, is the longest standing and biggest tournament of the yearly schedule for poker players. It all started back in 1970, when a group of professionals decided they needed one tournament per year that they would call the World Championship.

However, as time went by, more and more players started entering the event, and following Moneymaker’s win, the tournament grew to unimaginable numbers. In recent years, thousands of players enter the tournament despite the $10.000 entry fee and they all fight it out for millions of dollars reserved for the first place finisher.

Even if you don’t win the Main Event, making the final table of this prestigious event that goes on for well over a week means that you have probably become a millionaire. The tournament used to be a Seven Card Stud event many years ago, but today Texas Hold’em is the game of choice.

The Main Event is not all about the money however, as the deep structure gives the best players a chance to shine and show off their skills, patience and understanding of the game over the many days of play. While amateurs did make several big results over the years, it is predominantly the professionals who still make the final table, but there are always a few good stories of complete amateurs making a deep run and the big money.

2. The World Series of Poker Players Championship

Game: 10 Game
Famous Champion: Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi

The Poker Players Championship is certainly not the biggest of poker tournaments in terms of the numbers and the turnout, but most professional players consider it to be the most important and most prestigious event of the year.

This is because the tournament is almost exclusively played by top level professionals and the mixed game format makes it a lot more complex than your usual Texas Hold’em events.

The inaugural Players Championship was held back in 2006, when the game of choice was H.O.R.S.E and the buyin was $50.000. Back in the day, it used to be the biggest buyin tournament of the series and while that has changed since, the tournament remains very important to the pros.

The first tournament was won by Chip Reese, and following his death in 2007, the World Series decided to create the Chip Reese Trophy, which is given out to the winner of the event every year

This prestigious event changed formats as the game advanced, going from its initial H.O.R.S.E format to 8 Game and later to 10 Game, which is the format used today. The addition of the various formats of poker has made the tournament extremely complex and only fit for the very best poker players in the world.

Monte Carlo is known as the gambling capital of Europe and it was fitting that the season of EPT ends in Monte Carlo. This is why every season of EPT has been crowned with a single final event held in Monte Carlo with a few exceptions when the finale was held in other cities.

Whether it takes place in Monte Carlo or not, the EPT Grand Finale is easily one of the toughest fields you will see on the poker circuit. The tournament is played at No Limit Texas Hold’em tables and it brings together all the champions of the season’s event who get to play for free as well as any other top level players who decide to pony up the buyin for this difficult event themselves.

Those who are used to watching American televised poker may not recognize all the names at the final table of the EPT Grand Finale, but those familiar with European poker understand just how difficult of a field it really is.
